Preparing for Medical School

PREPARING FOR MEDICAL SCHOOL

Individuals interested in applying to medical school are encouraged to evaluate whether a career as a medical doctor is right for them, and consider if their qualifications, personal characteristics, and goals are a good match for applying to the University of Utah School of Medicine.

In addition to participating in a variety of activities and meeting certain academic requirements, applicants are encouraged to do their best to understand the experiences and everyday lives of physicians and the road ahead of them as medical students.

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has a number of resources to get yourself started:

Prospective applicants will also want to review the admissions requirements for their chosen schools to get an idea of what is expected of their application, as well as explore opportunities and resources provided at their current or former undergraduate institutions.

VISIT WITH A PREMEDICAL ADVISOR

It is strongly recommended that students meet with a premedical advisor as they prepare to apply to medical school. Advisors are familiar with various aspects of the application process and admissions requirements of most medical schools, and are a great resource for students and alumni throughout the application process.

Premedical advising offices are available on most college and university campuses, the table below includes contact information for premedical advising offices in the state of Utah and the surrounding Mountain West region.
